Hector Lara - ED Reinvent South Stockton Coalition

In this episode we feature the voice of Hector Laura who is the co-founder and executive director of the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition as well as the South Stockton Promise Zone.

Hector Lara

Hector Lara is a social worker by training who has spent 18 years as a professional in the non-profit sector in the fields of civic engagement, community development, health, youth development, behavioral health, policy, program development, and social services administration in communities throughout California and for one year in Massachusetts. Hector was born in Mexico but grew up in California’s Central Valley. He currently serves as a lecturer in the International Public Management program at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Hague, the Netherlands where he enjoys training and mentoring a new generation of public servants. Prior to this experience, Hector served as the Co-Founder & Executive Director for the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition and the South Stockton Promise Zone, a role he held for 4 years since he helped Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs and the late Pastor Amelia Adams start the Reinvent South Stockton movement. Hector is also currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Social Work.  He holds a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public Administration from the USC and a BA in Comparative Politics from U.C. San Diego. In his spare time, Hector likes to spend time with his wife Elsbeth, travel, read, and volunteer at his church and in his community.

Reinvent South Stockton Coalition

The Reinvent South Stockton Coalition, a public-private-non-profit collaborative initiative which aims to empower residents to transform their community – to affect the root causes of intergenerational poverty through improvements in safety, education, housing, job creation, economic development, and health. The Reinvent South Stockton Coalition leads efforts to collectively affect systemic poverty rooted in economics, politics & discrimination disproportionately affecting Americans, African Americans, Latinos, immigrants & children, who traditionally experiencing oppression. The Reinvent South Stockton Coalition developed the Promise Zone Plan and the Promise Zone Case Study that identified a legacy of community and economic development neglect.

Darryl Rutherford

Darryl Rutherford is the new Executive Director of The Reinvent South Stockton Coalition. Darryl earned a B.A. in social and behavioral sciences from CSU Monterey Bay and a M.S. in community development from the University of California at Davis. He has worked for the Community Services Planning Council, California Coalition for Rural Housing, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and ED for the Sacramento Housing Alliance. In 2018, Rutherford became ED of the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition, a collective impact movement which aims to empower residents to transform their community. Darryl lives in the Sacramento Region with his beautiful wife and two teenage daughters who enjoy camping, sporting activities, and vegging out together.
