“We're learning a lot from our Community Hubs participation and seeing how really hands-on Arts Rich Learning for students in small environments has a huge impact on their wellbeing”

In this episode, we feature the voice of Julie Rulyak Steinberg The Executive Director of the Community Music Center.

We wanted to feature the community Music Center because it is an anchor in our arts and culture ecosystem that has been supporting the training, cultivation and celebration of music from children to seniors since 1921.

Community Music Center

Community Music Center (CMC) makes high-quality music accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, regardless of financial means.

CMC founded in 1921, is a nonprofit music school and performance space with branches in the Mission and Richmond Districts. At CMC, we believe in the power of music to connect people, celebrate cultures and transform lives. CMC is a cornerstone San Francisco cultural institution and a vital hub for music education and performance anchored in the Mission District. We envision students and faculty who are engaged and fulfilled in making music together, and audiences who are energized by their experiences. Inspired by their training, our students are empowered to find their own voice, develop lasting relationships, embrace learning, and give back to their communities.

Last year, CMC awarded $2.4 million in tuition assistance, serving nearly 3,600 students of all ages, ethnicity, and income levels with music lessons, classes, and other programs. The school offers online music lessons to students of all ages on over 30 instruments, and a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, blues, Latin, pop, folk, rock, and western classical. CMC also presents free and low-cost events, workshops, and master classes for its students and for the public.

Donation/Volunteer

In 1921, Gertrude Field founded Community Music Center with one mission: music for everyone. Many things have changed since then, but CMC’s mission has remained the same. Our commitment to accessibility and our extensive tuition assistance program has ensured that no one is denied the opportunity to study music here for lack of ability to pay. Support Music For All through CMC's Music For All Campaign There are a variety of ways that you can support our mission to provide access to music for all. Here’s a brief list:

This is tough for folks to be, sort of isolated from one another. So we’ve really tried to create ways where people can still meet, still, get together, still, experience, that stirring passion, that music brings and to keep learning, sort of while we’re, starting to gradually prepare, for what it will look like when we returned to our campus
