“I see more conversations between organizations on how to do this well and how to do it together rather than just all ourselves in little, boxes”

In this episode our featured voice is the Artistic and General Director of Opera Parallele Nicole Paiement. “I started this company because I was very eager to not only collaborate with a lot of artists in the area, but specifically with living composers, and also try to find a way to sort of demystifying what opera is about bringing it into the 21st century by telling relevant stories and embracing modernist really making opera as compelling as it can be. And, you know, our vision is creating opera of our time and being part of this community through the art of storytelling and beautiful music”

Opera Parallèle

Opera Parallèle merges tradition with innovation to re-invent the power of opera in our modern world. Opera Parallèle is a professional, nonprofit organization that develops and performs contemporary opera. OP commissions new works, as well as re-orchestrations of contemporary grand opera, breathing new life into underperformed masterworks for the 20th & 21st centuries. The company champions the work of living artists, as it presents cutting-edge productions by today’s leading composers including Jake Heggie, Stewart Wallace, and Philip Glass. Collaboration is at the heart of every OP production, with creative interdisciplinary partnerships and intentional community engagement designed to enrich our audience’s experience. Currently entering its eleventh season, Opera Parallèle’s contemporary operas highlight stories of social relevance that explore the depth of the human condition. We embrace rituals of the old while bravely finding space for the new. This tension sparks creativity–colorful collisions that inspire new ways of experiencing opera.

I’ve been thinking that art is what keeps us alive and what keeps us alive, even when we have passed. And I think in these COVID times, I think we really realize that is something that I think that will be a vibrancy when we can go back into a hall together and experience art together as a community.
